Good afternoon,

Please join me in congratulating Kati Mackie in her placement as Principal of Henry Larsen Elementary School effective August 2024! While students, staff and families will miss her, we know she will bring all the joy, passion for education, professionalism and advocacy Crystal Bay has benefited from to her new school community.

We look forward to welcoming Vice Principal Trisha Yourth to Crystal Bay for the 2024-2025 school year.

Please join us for Crystal Bay’s Open House on Thursday, May 9th between 12:30-1:30 pm. Kindly sign in at the main office and we welcome you to tour the school, take in the bulletin displays, pop in and out of learning spaces, and then join us in the gymnasium at 1:15 for a student performance. Please note that educators will not be available for individual conversations/conferencing as this is an instructional block  but are happy to schedule a parent/guardian-educator meeting for another time.

If you have not yet already, please complete the Valuing Voices: Identity Matters Survey on your child/youth’s behalf. It is open until Friday May 10th. This information will allow the OCDSB to better design programs and supports to address issues including mental health and student achievement. It will also help inform decisions, guide school improvement planning, and inform educator practices aimed at reducing inequities in student experiences and outcomes. More information about the survey is included in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). If you have other questions or are looking for additional information please visit Thank you for your assistance as we undertake this important work.

A reminder that there is a new Student Absence Management System on May 13th. If you have not yet already, I encourage you to follow the steps in the SafeArrival Postcard, using the email address we have on file for you to create your account for the app/website. To report absences by phone, use the toll free number 1-833-202-1417. Additional information is available on the webpage.

News from Your Trustee Suzanne Nash

Share your thoughts, ask questions please. The OCDSB is undertaking an elementary program review.  The current model was put in place over two decades ago. The outcome of this review is not predetermined, but it is hoped that it will lead to changes that will allow us to improve elementary education to better meet the diverse needs of all students. Feedback is being gathered through a number of approaches including 7 scheduled public meetings.  Join me on Wednesday May 22 from 7pm to 8:30pm. at D. Roy Kennedy Public School, 919 Woodroffe Avenue. That same evening, from 6:30 to 8pm a meeting will also be held at Glashan Public School, 28 Arlington Avenue. Can’t join us? You can still share your feedback on Engage OCDSB

I continue my school visits.  At the request of staff and parents at Regina Alternative, a visit to the kinder yard has resulted in a plan to support a shade structure installation.  I was able to participate in parent council meetings at Fisher Park, Crystal Bay Special Education Centre and Woodroffe Secondary HS.  I attended the terrific student council led Earth Day assembly at Woodroffe Avenue PS about water, what the issues are surrounding water and how to protect it.  Take your MPP to School Week is May 21 to 24.  Invitations have been extended to MPP Chandra Pasma and Joel Harden, dates and locations to be confirmed. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out at [email protected]  Take care.

[Note, We will welcome MPP Chandra to Crystal Bay on May 21st -KF]
